One of the most important things in a dog's life is the Walk.
It matters especially to shelter dogs that are cooped up in the shelter for most of the week.
On long awaited weekends and public holidays, they are eager to have us slip their collars over their heads, push open the gate leading to their kennel and lead them out by the leash into the great outdoors.
The way they brim over with excitement when we touch the leash, the way some of them would bark impatiently or run around in overjoyed circles are just a few indications of how much these walks mean to them.
Outside, they are greeted by an exciting array of smells, sounds and sights. They sniff every inch of the grass, tree trunks or lamp posts, exchanging pee messages with dogs who have long come and gone.
On each of Saturday and Sunday, as well as any public holiday along the way, we roll out the Pledge a Walk program where we rope in volunteers to help walk every one of our dogs.
When we first started in 2010, we were desperately shorthanded. Not every dog got to head out each week. Fortunately, we are now blessed with a core group of regular volunteers who help ensure that every dog gets its walk on both Saturdays and Sundays. If there aren't enough people to go around, these regular volunteers go for multiple walks with different dogs until every name on our To Walk List is ultimately checked.
We sure could do with your help!
If you are interested to walk our dogs, please email us at farmwaylove@gmail.com to fix a date to come down to the shelter. On Saturdays, we would require your help to shower them as well.
All volunteers are required to be 18 years old and above. We do not require any minimum commitment period. On the contrary, we suggest you participate once to assess if you enjoy the activities we have to offer. If you do, you will find yourself coming down frequently thereafter on your own accord.
While we are always looking to expand our group of regular volunteers, we want your involvement to come from the heart. Volunteering, as the word itself suggests, should never be an obligation.
Walking a dog doesn't just benefit the dog. It is in fact a six-legged odyssey. Finding a common rhythm with the dog that you are walking, watching it react to its surroundings, padding along beside each other silently... Over time, you will discover that what connects the walker and the walked is more than the adjoining leash. Dog walks are a time when friendships are born.
If you are keen to volunteer with us and get to know our dogs, please email us at farmwaylove@gmail.com.
Pledge a walk... One walk doesn't matter much to us. But for them, it means the world.
Thank you!
